Homework

Reading:
Read at home every night and talk about the text.
Build a love of reading.

Writing:

- Writing - Find any opportunity to encourage writing at home, get children to read out their writing to check that it makes sense. All of the children have a storybird account that they can access at home, the children are set assignments and they can also choose to write their own stories.

Spelling:
- According to the National Standards, by the end of Year 4, children should know most words from Essential list 4 and many from 5-7.
- At school I will be focusing on the spelling rules, phonograms, suffixes, and other word knowledge.
At home the children need to learn their essential words.
Your child came out at:

List ________

At home, your child needs to learn ALL of the words from their list. When they have learned these words, they can move onto the next list and so on.
Make the learning fun. The children can practise their words in a range of different ways including:
 - Magnetic letters, playdoh, orally calling out the words, writing the words with chalk, putting the words into a story, finding synonyms or antonyms for their words and so on.

If your child scored above List 7, they will be starting a “Successful Spelling” programme. All of the instructions are on the sheet. They will be doing most of these activities at school, they can practise the activities at home as well and learn all of their words.
NB: If you have the internet at home, the children can type in 10 words at a time into a website called spelling city, it will then give them activities to do with their words.  I also set spelling tasks on study ladder.

Essential spelling lists

Maths:
Later in Term One the children will be having their first basic facts test. In this assessment the children only get four seconds to answer each question. They only get four seconds because we want to see what they actually know, not what they can work out.
According to National Standards, children in Year 3 should be working at the beginning of Stage 5 = 5B, children in Year 4 should be working at the end of Stage 5 = 5C.

A lot of children in the class have come out as stage 4 or below which is below where they need to be. They need to practise practise practise their basic facts!
I have attached 10 questions for each week that your child has to learn depending on the stage they came out at. They need to LEARN these facts so that they can answer the question within 4 seconds. They will be tested on these questions each Friday.

NB: There are fantastic websites online that will help the children to practise their basic facts.
